Half Life

This photographic artwork forms part of the new dance work Half | Life, an intriguing multidisciplinary full-length work by Lo|Co Arts, directed and choreographed by Loughlan Prior, with music performed live by New Zealand composer, Claire Cowan.

Along with the manipulation of MiMU (wearable) music technology, the photographs and video are projected in grand scale above the dancers and move and morph as the dancers perform on stage.  The production explores the vertical integration of digital space with an outstanding company of dance artists in the live world below.

‘As life recedes further into a virtual space, corporeal existence is slowly left behind. The frontier of physical and psychological extremes is crossed as the spiritual and the digital intertwine. Shut down the somatic. Construct upgraded reality. Run the human race. Everything can be yours’.

Celia Walmsley

Half | Life
, the photographic work is a very special collaboration with Laura Saxon-Jones (dancer Lo | Co Arts and x Royal New Zealand Ballet) and Loughlan Prior (Director Lo | Co Arts and choreographer in residence Royal New Zealand Ballet).

I've known and admired both artists for many years and presented Loughlan's work during my tenure as Director at Tempo Dance Festival.  Loughlan and I also collaborated on the The Line 2021.

Laura and I collaborated to create these images for Half | Life based on the brief from Loughlan.

The images, along with video, formed a key part of the performance Half | Life as part of the projection above the dancers performing on stage.

Exhibition

Half | Life was booked premiere at Tempo Dance Festival in Auckland on 8 October, 2021.

The artwork images were booked to show first at the Artists of Bannockburn Exhibition 2021.

Loughlan and Laura were booked to perform an excerpt from Half | Life in Ballet & Beyond to sold out audiences on Sunday 26 Sept 2021 at Across the Bridge Festival, Bannockburn, before it premiered at Tempo in Auckland.

Due to Covid 19 both the Across the Bridge Festival, Bannockburn 2021 and Tempo Dance Festival 2021 were cancelled.

Half | Life premiered at the Tempo Dance Festival 2022, Auckland.

About Collaboration

Collaboration and co-authorship are essential elements in our process, form and outcomes. The work is co-authored and co-owned by the collaborators.  Nothing happens without the others agreement.  This reflects Daniel Palmer’s (2017) proposal on the move away, since the 1960s, from the ‘art-world trope’ of sole adventurer photographer towards collaborative work. Issues of agency, power, and the link between authorship and authority, also influence the work.

Collaborations past and present, with dancers and choreographers, include Katherine Minor (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 & 25),  Damani Campbell Williams (2024), Gretchen Steimle (2023), Loughlan Prior (2020, 2021, 2022), Laura Saxon-Jones (2021), Jessie McCall (2017, 2018), Jared Hemopo (2018), Emma Delabarca (2017, 2018) and Kayla Paige (2015). My work has been exhibited at the Auckland Festival of Photography, Exposure and St James Theatre, Wellington, the Aotea and Bruce Mason Centres, Auckland and the annual Artists of Bannockburn Exhibition.
