Before While Rest Past

Before While Rest Past
by
Celia Walmsley and Katherine Minor (collaborators)

‘Before While Rest Past’ is a collaboration between Celia Walmsley (photographer) and Katherine Minor (dancer).

Ballet is the epitome of perceived perfection.  The sublime beauty, supreme atheliticism, the glitter of the costumes and glamour of the stage.

‘Before While Rest Past’ explores some of the physical and philosophical dilemas that lie behind that journey in search of perfection. The hundred of pairs of worn out shoes, the blisters and bunnions, the hours of sweat, tension, competition, questionning and waiting.

‘Past’ is a tribute to Katherine’s shoemaker ‘L’ at Freed of London who is soon to retire, after which Katherine’s shoes will no longer be hand made. ‘Past’ is a tribute to the dying art of hand made pointe shoes.

Katherine Minor

Katherine Minor is a soloist dancer with the Royal New Zealand Ballet.  Katherine is also a ceramicist with keen interest in philosophy and writing.

Celia Walmsley
This collaboration with friend and artist extraordinaire, Katherine Minor is particularly special as we continue to build collaborative artworks that combine our phylosophical and narraive ideas and dance and photographic disciplines.

As a photographer my artwork primarily centres on collaboration with dancers and choreographers and explores the oxymoronic relationship between stillness and movement, photography and dance.

Exhibition

Before While Rest Past was exhibited  at the Bannockburn Arts Exhibition, October 2022, at the stunning Cairnmuir Woolshed, Bannockburn, Central Otago.

About Collaboration

Collaboration and co-authorship are essential elements in our process, form and outcomes. The work is co-authored and co-owned by the collaborators.  Nothing happens without the others agreement.  This reflects Daniel Palmer’s (2017) proposal on the move away, since the 1960s, from the ‘art-world trope’ of sole adventurer photographer towards collaborative work. Issues of agency, power, and the link between authorship and authority, also influence the work.

Collaborations past and present, with dancers and choreographers, include Katherine Minor (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 & 25),  Damani Campbell Williams (2024), Gretchen Steimle (2023), Loughlan Prior (2020, 2021, 2022), Laura Saxon-Jones (2021), Jessie McCall (2017, 2018), Jared Hemopo (2018), Emma Delabarca (2017, 2018) and Kayla Paige (2015). My work has been exhibited at the Auckland Festival of Photography, Exposure and St James Theatre, Wellington, the Aotea and Bruce Mason Centres, Auckland and the annual Artists of Bannockburn Exhibition.
